Meet Hiro: An Inspiring Youth Leader

Hiro’s Story…

My name is Hiro and I am a Project Avary Junior Counselor. I would like to share the story of my personal journey with Avary and how it has inspired who I am today.

My father has been incarcerated my entire life. Growing up, I really struggled because my dad wasn’t around. There were so many things about life and the world I felt I had to learn on my own. I didn’t know any other kids in the same situation so I never spoke about what I was going through. I only had one friend who knew that my father was in prison. I felt alone in this experience.

My mother discovered Project Avary when I was finishing middle school and I joined the online groups. I felt extremely shy at first, but very welcomed by everyone. This was the first time I got to meet other kids like me.

Joining Avary was the beginning of a lot of new things for me...

At first I was nervous to open up, but when I finally shared my story and didn’t feel judged, I saw a huge change in myself. I never realized that I was keeping all these feelings inside and how much it was affecting me. I also didn’t realize how much better I could feel after telling other people what I’d been through. Joining Avary was the beginning of a lot of new things for me.

I began attending the outdoor retreats and there were a lot of people I didn’t know yet. For the first time in my life, my confidence was growing and I actually felt comfortable meeting new people. I felt such a strong sense of belonging at Avary.

As I continued participating more and more, I discovered so many new interests. I developed a special connection to nature and I love spending time outdoors. I am starting a vegetable garden at my house and I plan to sell produce at a farmer’s market stand. I’ve learned a lot about cooking while at Avary retreats and now I like helping cook meals at home. I’ve also learned to play guitar after being encouraged by Kele, an Avary counselor I admire.

Project Avary has given me the opportunity to experience so many things I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. I’m not sure if many people know that there’s a financial responsibility with incarcerated loved ones. My amazing mother works so hard to support not only me, but also my father. There isn’t always time or money for things like vacations or special activities. One of my favorite Avary experiences was Family Camp, where my mother was able to attend a special weekend together with the Avary community.

When I originally joined Avary, I didn’t know what to expect. Sometimes I can’t believe how much it has changed my life. I am now a Junior Counselor and I want to be an example to the younger kids coming into the program. I want them to be able to experience the healing and growth that I’ve found through Avary. I’ve actually just signed up for a mentoring class through my high school to continue guiding others.

Project Avary has helped me to become who I want to be. I have gained social skills, self esteem and valuable life skills. Project Avary is so important in my life that when my mother and I had to relocate, we decided to move near Avary’s offices to be more involved.

I am so grateful for Project Avary and those who support of this incredible organization!
