The Healing Power of Nature
Embracing the Magic of California's Coasts & Parks - Utilizing outdoor activities to build social-emotional skills, heal trauma and grow community
Getting outside for fun and exploration is a fundamental component to Project Avary's programming. Engaging in nature-based recreational activities is linked to positive effects on mental health. These effects include enhanced mood, cognitive function, rejuvenation, overall well-being, as well as reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Access to Nature
Over 90% of our youth have never experienced the ocean prior to joining Project Avary. Common barriers to access include transportation challenges, time restraints and financial limitations. Many of our youth are raised by single parents or grandparents with limited resources. With the help of our partners, we are able to provide nature rich experiences for all of our participants.
Play & Joy
Play is a proven tool to foster healing from trauma, creating an opportunity for youth to express emotions and imaginatively explore new ways of coping with difficult feelings. Sharing fun experiences is a powerful way to build community, safety and connection, inspiring continued engagement. Avary incorporates fun for all age levels, creating a safe and joyful environment.
Growth Through Challenge
Our retreats and camps are thoughtfully curated for youth to gain new skills and build resilience. Such activities include hiking, surfing, skiing, rafting, horseback riding, fishing and an Avary favorite, ropes course. These adventures often require overcoming fears and working as a team to move through challenges, culminating to inspire leadership and personal growth.
